Sister Carmen Community Center is interested in having an Experienced Gardener (EG) volunteer at our food bank garden this summer. The Experienced Gardner will lead a group of volunteers working in our cooperative garden one evening a week. When on site, the Experienced Gardner will have the opportunity to lead, instruct and educate volunteers and food bank participants who work in our organic vegetable and herb garden. Other aspects of our garden include three-bin composting, drip irrigation, children’s garden, pollinator garden, trellises, raised beds and cold frames.
The EG has choice of Sunday, Monday or Tuesday, late afternoons or evenings. Ideally, the time will be available to people who work or go to school during the day and like to volunteer later in the day.
Tasks include planting, caring for and harvesting vegetables, instructing and supervising volunteers. EG will use their education as EG to improve yield, diagnose plant issues, observe and identify pests as well as consider IPM plans. EG and Garden Coordinator Robyn Rathweg will meet monthly and communicate by emails or phone regularly to manage the garden.
EG should be confident and open in their gardening skills, as well as friendly and comfortable in working with a variety of ages of volunteers. The intention of the garden is to provide a gateway to both volunteerism as well as gardening knowledge, so providing a positive and welcoming atmosphere is important. Gardening is hard work, but it can also be fun! We have all ages of people volunteer in the garden, and also provide space for young children to interact with nature.
EG would work 2 hours a week, starting in late April or early May and continuing through the gardening season.
A one-hour Volunteer Orientation is mandatory for all volunteers at Sister Carmen Community Center. (Contact Ann@sistercarmen.org )
This is a unique opportunity for an Experienced Gardener who wants to put into practice their new knowledge of the natural world, as well as share that knowledge with willing learners… while contributing to providing fresh, organic food for people in need in East Boulder County.
I look forward to meeting a new Experienced Gardener who is excited to share their wisdom!
