Sister Carmen Community Center recognizes and builds on existing strengths within the family to assist participants in providing healthy, safe and loving environments for their children. Our services help to ensure that all kids in our community have the opportunity to grow up happy, healthy and thriving.
Parenting Education
We offer parenting education through on site programs, as well as partnership with organizations such as The Parenting Place. Our Individual & Family Advocates offer child development education via the Bright Beginnings program. It is our belief that there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to parent education, so we strive to offer a variety of approaches and techniques. Take me to the: calendar or class descriptions.
Access to Children’s Health Insurance
We assist parents in applying for CHP+ (Child Health Plan Plus) and Medicaid. By assisting families with health insurance enrollment we can educate families on the importance of a medical home. When families have a primary care physician they are able to place more focus on prevention and decrease visits to urgent care and the emergency room. We strive to link every eligible child we serve to accessible health care.
Child Care Assistance
Our Individual & Family Advocates assist participants in applying for CCAP (Child Care Assistance Program). This program provides families with the opportunity to remove childcare as a barrier to successful employment. We also direct participants to our local Child Care Resource & Referral agency as well as the Qualistar online provider search to link them with resources on quality childcare.
Nutrition Education for Children
Our children’s nutrition classes focus on food groups and how food grows. We incorporate visits to our garden, and in the future we plan to provide special children’s gardening classes. Children are provided interactive opportunities that educate them about nutrition and cooking. They learn that healthy food tastes good and can be fun! Take me to the: calendar or class descriptions.
Developmental Screenings
Is your child on track for kindergarten? Screening young children is an effective way for families to catch problems and start treatment when it does the most good—during the early years when the child’s brain and body are developing so rapidly. Unfortunately, most children who would benefit from early intervention are not identified until after they start grade school. We strive to offer timely developmental screenings that assist families in accessing the right resources at the right time. I’d like more information.
School Supplies
Through Crayons to Calculators we collaborate with seven local agencies to ensure all students in the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley School Districts have the school supplies they need each fall. This is a community-wide school supply drive that provides for thousands of students in need. SCCC is a collection site where donors from the community can drop of new back packs full of age-appropriate school supplies. With Crayons to Calculators we deliver the back packs full of supplies to schools, who then distribute to students the week before school starts. All students on free and reduced lunch are listed to receive a back pack, and any other student in need may also make the request for a back pack. The amount of students we serve through this effort is increasing every year.
